Little Judges LJ001CD

Charlie Parr’s first two albums faithfully reproduced the propulsive growl of 1920s American rural country-blues as the young guitarist and banjo player plucked and howled his way through original songs that could have sat easily in the repertoire of Charlie Patton or Dock Boggs. The cartoonist Robert Crumb, himself no stranger to a ludicrously expensive vintage 78, is a fan. Parr’s third release sees him moving from acting the role of the troubled troubadour with a hellhound on his trail to fully inhabiting it. The sinister Bethlehem is truly chilling, while the title tune’s multitracked picking creates a spiritually uplifting surge. Three stars
